Foods That Can Make You Happy

For the most part, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and should be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. You should see to it, though, that what you make includes the yolk. When you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Consume an egg and feel a lot happier!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are great if you are wanting to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They help you feel full also which can really help to make your mood better. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is really good for your mood. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a particular amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know green tea can help you be happier too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
