Use Food to Boost Your Mood
In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really healthy and good for you. There are several foods that, when you eat them, could better your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, try a few of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat a few eggs to jolly up!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to fight depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.
Some grains are actually excellent for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are fantastic at helping you have a happier mood. They can help you feel full for longer too, helping you feel better. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods too!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
