Learn How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
A lot of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods actually do elevate your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at dealing with depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat an egg and be happy!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are great if you want to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Some grains are truly wonderful for repelling bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can actually bring you down! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. You digest them quicker than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were simply anticipating to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew green tea could help you feel so much healthier. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!
