Use Food to Improve Your Mood

A lot of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are wonderful at battling depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mixfrom a variety of seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all fantastic for helping to raise your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to raise your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein source.

Cold water fish are good if you are wanting to feel better. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.

Grains can be good for fighting a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full too which can actually help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can really make you feel awful! These grains can improve your mood because it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while also relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods also!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Test out these hints instead!
