How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
Many of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, can improve your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are great at battling depression. You should make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk especially, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Eat an egg and jolly up!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.
Cold water fish are great if you want to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you fight your depression.
Some grains are really great for repelling bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are excellent at helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling starved can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel so much healthier. Now you are aware that it helps you to lift your moods too!
As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
